Glider Swarm Sensor Distribution Study, Year 1
Project Description
Two phased approach: a mass, volume, payload trade study followed by development and flight test characterization of most promising options. Advance in STMD with JPL system and science customers.\nCurrent Martian surface observations are either highly localized (lander/rover) or indirect (satellites). There is a need to develop a sensor network that can span 100 sq. km that fits within secondary payload requirements. This approach uses a novel glider swarm to probabilistically provide much greater distribution range than ballistic sensor deployment. This swarm uses a new swarm guidance algorithm in development at JPL.\n

Anticipated Benefits
To understand the capabilities of the very small gliders to distribute a sensor network operating within a 10kg, 6U cubesat constraint\nTo characterize very small glider distribution performance in free and directed flight\n The Mars Glider Swarm will provide planetary scientists with the ability to deliver sensors across the surface of Mars with a distribution pattern not possible with simple ballistic ejection. This will enable a mesh sensor network to collect atmospheric data that has not previously been possible.
