Development of Improved Combustor Scaling Laws for Dual-Mode Ramjets (AAVP33)
Project Description
To improve current engine (1X) performance and enable engine scale-up to fully reusable vehicle scales (100X), NASA will develop and deliver mathematical models and associated validation test data with quantified uncertainty that support the design of high-speed combustors inclusive of green fuels. NASA will demonstrate such capability by reducing the length of the state-of-the-art cavity flameholder by at least 10% with a goal of reaching 25% cavity length reduction relative to a state-of-the-art baseline.

The benefits resulting from the successful completion are as follows:
- Enable the design of smaller cavities which will reduce the demand for cooling capacity and reduce vehicle weight and drag.
- Enable the optimization of fuel burn for an appropriately sized cavity which will increase range of the vehicle.
- This capability will benefit high-speed engine developers working future commercial and military high-speed/hypersonic reusable vehicles.
