Project Description

25X Fresnel Lens Photovoltaic Concentrator for Deep Space Missions
Identification and Significance of CCRPP Program: Under Phase II, we are developing a new photovoltaic concentrator array technology with unprecedented performance metrics. We have already developed a new 4X line-focus Fresnel lens, a new 35% efficient 4-junction photovoltaic cell, a new graphene sheet radiator to dissipate waste heat from the solar cells with 80% lower mass than past radiators, and a new articulating receiver to allow single-axis sun-tracking. Under Phase II E, we are developing a 25X point-focus lens for integration into the Orbital-ATK game changing solar array for NASA deep space missions. Under CCRPP, we will develop a new 25X multi-junction solar cell for use in the new point-focus concentrator technology. CCRPP Objectives: To develop a new 25X multi-junction solar cell, needed for the game changing solar array being developed by Orbital-ATK for NASA deep space missions. Current funding for the game changing array program is inadequate to support new cell development in Option 1 of that program. By doing the cell development under a CCRPP program, we will accelerate the development of the new Orbital-ATK array for future NASA deep space missions. CCRPP Work Plan: Over a 7-month performance period, we will design, procure, and test a new 25X solar cell for the Orbital-ATK game changing solar array, produce a prototype of the new 25X concentrator, including lens, radiator, and solar cell, and verify the performance of the new concentrator. NASA Applications: Numerous Planned Space Missions Including Missions for Technology Development, Exploration, and Science to the Moon, Mars, and Deep Space Non-NASA Applications: DOD and Commercial Space Missions Including Solar Electric Propulsion Missions from LEO or GTO to MEO or GEO, Asteroid Mining Missions, etc. Rad-Hard, Laser-Hard, Resilient National Security Spacecraft More »
