Project Description

T0059-P On the performance of a nanocatalyst-based direct ammonia alkaline fuel cell (DAAFC) under microgravity conditions for water reclamation and energy applications

This study proposes to study the effects of microgravity on the performance of a direct ammonia alkaline fuel cell (DAAFC). The objective being to assess the performance of a DAAFC using nano-based electrodes to enhance ammonia electrochemical decomposition under zero gravity conditions for water reclamation and energy production applications. Specifically, this proposal will evaluate the performance of a DAAFC under microgravity conditions as a strategy to increase to TRL level 6 of this technology by evaluating the following catalysts on the anode side where the ammonia electrochemical oxidation occurs: platinized boron-doped diamond nanoparticles, platinized nanoporous catalysts (average diameters of: 64, 100 and 137 Å) and faceted platinum (1 0 0) nanoparticles on various carbon supports.
