The nation needs these aircraft to protect and preserve the environment and for the projected growth in both domestic and international air transportation utilization. NASA research is inherent in every major modern U.S. aircraft, and the type of research performed by the AAV Program will prime the technology pipeline, enabling continued U.S. leadership, competitiveness, and jobs in the future. Technologies and design capabilities developed for these advanced vehicles will integrate multiple, simultaneous vehicle performance considerations including fuel burn, noise, emissions, and intrinsic safety. Across the program, NASA will continue to engage partners from industry, academia, and other government agencies to maintain a sufficiently broad perspective on technology solutions to these challenges, to pursue mutually beneficial collaborations, and to leverage opportunities for effective technology transition.

The AAV Program directly supports three of the ARMD Strategic Thrusts (Thrust 2: Innovation in Commercial Supersonic Aircraft, Thrust 3: Ultra-efficient Commercial Vehicles, and Thrust 4: Transition to Low-Carbon Propulsion) and consists of five projects:

(1) The Advanced Air Transport Technology (AATT) Project conducts fundamental research to improve aircraft performance and minimize environmental impacts from subsonic air vehicles.

(2)The Revolutionary Vertical Lift Technology (RVLT) Project develops and validates tools, technologies and concepts to overcome key barriers, including noise, efficiency, and safety for vertical lift vehicles.

(3) The Commercial Supersonic Technology (CST) Project explores theoretical research for potential advanced capabilities and configurations for low boom supersonic aircraft.

(4)The Advanced Composites (AC) Project conducts research to reduce the timeline for certification of composite structures for aviation.

(5)The Aeronautics Evaluation and Test Capabilities (AETC) Project ensures the strategic availability and accessibility of a critical suite of aeronautics ground test facilities necessary to meet Agency and national aeronautics testing requirements.

The work in the AAV Program directly benefits the public through the development of techniques and concepts for air vehicles that are cleaner, quieter, and more energy efficient. Research efforts in revolutionary aircraft configurations, lighter and stiffer materials, improved propulsion systems, and advanced concepts for high-lift and drag reduction all target the efficiency and environmental compatibility of future air vehicles. The program also helps the country develop and maintain excellence in the aeronautics workforce by providing significant research opportunities in all of its projects.

The Advanced Air Vehicles Program (AAVP) conducts cutting-edge research that will generate innovative concepts, technologies, capabilities, and knowledge to enable revolutionary advances for a wide range of air vehicles.

The work in the Advanced Air Vehicles Program (AAVP) directly benefits the public through the development of techniques and concepts for air vehicles that are cleaner, quieter, and more energy efficient.
