The objectives of AOSP are to:
AOSP is comprised of three projects: Airspace Technology Demonstrations (ATD), Shadow Mode Assessment Using Realistic Technologies for the National Airspace System (SMART-NAS) for Safe Trajectory-Based Operations, and Safe Autonomous System Operations (SASO). The three projects are formulated to make major contributions to air traffic needs of the future through the development and research of foundational concepts and technologies and their analysis, integration, and maturation in relevant, system-level environments. Each of the projects are, much like the airspace system itself, highly integrated and require attention to critical system integration and transition interfaces with the NAS.
This program continues Airspace Systems Program research, and the aircraft state awareness research and system wide safety research that was previously conducted within the Aviation Safety Program. AOSP develops and explores fundamental concepts, algorithms, and technologies to increase throughput and efficiency of the National Airspace System safely. Also, the program provides knowledge, concepts, and methods to the aviation community to manage increasing complexity in the design and operation of vehicles and the air transportation system.
