The transceiver architecture which was studied is based on a design which generates a flexible number of communication streams from a single laser. A second approach was also studied, which directly offers a very high modulation bandwidth (> 100 GHz). Use of integrated photonics offers scalable high bit-rate communications with orders-of-magnitude reductions in SWAP and energy consumption, and improvements on link performance and bandwidth compared to both RF communications and existing optical technologies. Research accomplishments were demonstrated using both table-top component assemblies, and microchips. Integrated silicon photonics chipsets were fabricated at the university and using helpful external collaborations with a USA-based silicon foundry process (Sandia Photonics Process, Sandia National Labs, Albuquerque, NM).</p>","infoText":"Closed out","infoTextExtra":"Project closed out","isIndirect":false,"infusionPretty":"","isBiDirectional":false,"technologyOutcomeDateString":"Jan 2020","technologyOutcomeDateFullString":"January 2020","technologyOutcomePartnerPretty":"","technologyOutcomePathPretty":"Closed Out","technologyOutcomeRationalePretty":""}],"libraryItems":[{"files":[],"libraryItemId":364204,"title":"Oscilloscopic Capture of Greater-Than-100 GHz, Ultra-Low Power Optical Waveforms Enabled by Integrated Electrooptic Devices","libraryItemType":"Link","url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/jlt.2019.2954295","projectId":91516,"isPrimary":false,"internalOnly":false,"publishedDateString":"","entryDateString":"01/28/25 02:02 AM","libraryItemTypePretty":"Link","modifiedDateString":"01/28/25 02:02 AM"},{"files":[],"libraryItemId":364202,"title":"Project Website","libraryItemType":"Link","url":"https://www.nasa.gov/strg#.VQb6T0jJzyE","projectId":91516,"internalOnly":false,"publishedDateString":"","entryDateString":"01/22/25 01:10 AM","libraryItemTypePretty":"Link","modifiedDateString":"10/25/24 02:23 PM"},{"files":[],"libraryItemId":364203,"title":"Wide-range and fast thermally-tunable silicon photonic microring resonators using the junction field effect","libraryItemType":"Link","url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/oe.24.023081","projectId":91516,"isPrimary":false,"internalOnly":false,"publishedDateString":"","entryDateString":"01/28/25 02:02 AM","libraryItemTypePretty":"Link","modifiedDateString":"01/28/25 02:02 AM"}],"states":[{"abbreviation":"CA","country":{"abbreviation":"US","countryId":236,"name":"United States"},"countryId":236,"name":"California","stateTerritoryId":59,"isTerritory":false}],"endDateString":"Jan 2020","startDateString":"Jan 2016"}}
